Lufa Farms, a Canada-based commercial agricultural company, has established a rooftop greenhouse in Laval, Quebec, a development aimed at increasing its cultivation capacity by three fold and expanding its sustainable food and fresh-produce offerings.
The 43,000ft2 greenhouse is approximately 50% larger than Lufa Farms' original rooftop greenhouse in Ahuntsic-Cartierville.
Lufa Farms founding member and greenhouse director Lauren Rathmell said the additional greenhouse allows the company to offer a wider range of fresh, premium vegetables, all grown responsibly and delivered daily to local consumers.
"Now we have space to grow more than 20 specialty tomatoes, including pink cherries, Striped German, and legendary Cherokee Purples - just some of the delicious and unique vegetables we grow that are not available from grocery stores," Rathmell added.
Since 2011, Lufa Farms has been offering fresh and responsibly grown vegetables to local consumers and has partnered with organic-potato grower Mario Bessette to supplement its offerings with vegetables unsuitable to greenhouse cultivation.
The company represents around 40-odd Quebec organic farmers and producers which focus on sustainable food, from root vegetables and maple syrup, to cheese and fresh-baked bread.
