American automaker General Motors has issued a recall on 59,628 units of Saturn Aura mid-sized cars in the US and Canada over a problem with the automatic transmission shifters.

The recall affects certain 2007 and 2008 model Aura cars equipped with four-speed transmissions, which features a transmission shift cable that could possibly break, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Among the total number of vehicles recalled, 56,214 were reportedly sold in the US, while the remaining units were delivered to Canada.

According to the company, rupture of cable when the car is in motion may leave the driver incapable of shifting the vehicle to park or removing the ignition key.

General Motors claimed to know about 28 crashes and four injuries, but no deaths relating to the issue during the past seven years.

As part of the recall, the company will replace the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket, according to the NHTSA documents.
