It Is Reported From Seminar on Research and Development on Utilization of Steel Slag

It is reported from the seminar on research and development on utilization of Baosteel's steel slag. It was known to all that the successful application of the permeable brick made of steel slag in the Expo Park of 2010 Shanghai World Expo, since from then, Baosteel has developed more slag products in recent years, these state-of-the-arts products are used in some key projects in China, such as, the Observatory 65-meter radio telescope in Sheshan, the heavy counterweight concrete in Nantong SKC prject, non-metallic abrasives used in  construction of a Shipyard of Shipping company of COSCO, to name just a few. As a result, these successful applications realizes good functions and caused environmental-friendly and ecological effects, and it also received many positive feedbacks from the users widely.

Whether the steel slag to be utilized effectively and efficiently or not has a directly impact on the results of reuse of resources made of iron and steel industry and environmental protection. In recent years, Association of Utilization of steel slag of Baosteel as always follows the philosophy of environmental management, by upholding the principle of scientific utilization of steel slag in the following three aspects: utilizing as much as possible, turning it be harmful into be valuable, turning wastes into treasures, In turn,  it plays the respective professional advantages in their disciplines of its association members to take an active and innovative activities and practices  in research and development; In addition to the knock-out competitive products, such as, fine powder of steel slag, slag molding sand, pervious concrete, steel slag heavy concrete, Baosteel has developed a number of products applied in many fields, for example, cementitious materials made of fine powder of steel slag applied in the new type of wall block. Meanwhile, for the application in Baosteel Zhanjiang steel project, it has put forward the research on utilization of sludges without contenting ferrous metallurgical elements applied in lightweight concrete block proactively, expanding new methods to utilize the metallurgical slag and sludge effectively, on the basis of these researches, it provided technical supports to completely change the status quo of disposing the unworthy sludge from steel industry need to be disposed only by landfill.

In recent years, Baosteel as always deepens and broadens Research & Development on utilization of steel slag. The application of massive counterweight concrete is one of the highlight in field of comprehensive utilization of Baosteel's steel slag last year. By using the advantages and features of granulated steel slag made by a drum device, such as high stability and bulk density, massive counterweight concrete was used in the the key construction project in Shanghai in 2012 - the project of 65-m radio telescope in Sheshan, which is ranked as the first largest one in Asia; and the fourth largest one in the world. As an alternative to traditional cement barite concrete, Baosteel successfully developed a ready-mixed cast-in-place steel slag counterweight concrete, which is featured with heavy weight in single slag concrete, ultra-high-elevation construction, this technology can be used to make a 230-ton balanced cabinet made by steel slag heavy counterweight concrete continuously, in this case, it meets the special requirements on the strength of counterweight concrete, the overall balance and other requirements, therefore, the successful applicaton is regarded as a typical excellent case to promote the comprehensive utilization of steel slag. Another case in point, Nantong SKC industrial project, not having adopted engineering of deep foundation piles in building model project in PET workshop along the riverside, Baosteel provided more than 1,000 cubic meters of bulky steel slag structure with heavy concrete, by adopting this solutions, it overcomed engineering flaws in the project, it not only realized reinforcement and counterweight balance function of overall anti-pressure and anti-floating by adopting deep pit foundation material traditionally, but also it saved the loss incurred by modification in engineering for the investor, as a result, it avoided delaying the construction schedule, therefore, Baosteel attained high reputation from the owner and the construction company. Moreover, Baosteel special concrete material made of steel slag also have been used in building a shipping Shipyard of COSCO, the products won a great of appreciations from the users.

In the field of comprehensive utilization of steel slag, not only did Baosteel   developed a series of typical products which gives the advantages of steel slag, such as, steel slag pervious concrete, steel slag heavy concrete, steel slag marble, non-metallic abrasives made of steel slag and other products, and  owned a number of intellectual properties in treatment and utilization of steel slag, thereof, more than 40 patents and over 30 of utility models have been applied successfully. The related national standard has been officially released in 2011, i.e. Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives - Part 11: Special type grit of steel slag. Last year, the authorities concerned in Shanghai started to take preparation of the local standards for Technical specification for application of steel slag pervious concrete and heavy concrete. In addition, Baosteel had completed the amendments on the relative enterprise standards for utilization of 3 kinds of slag products.
