Burk Discussed Applications of Argon, Xenon and Krypton as Gases Used in IG Filling

Mike Burk, product manager with Edgetech IG, presented "Gas Filling" at the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) Educational Seminar Tuesday. In his presentation, Burk discussed the history and applications of argon, xenon and krypton as gases used in insulating glass (IG) filling.

"Argon, krypton and xenon are less conductive than air," Burk said in his presentation. "But just like air in a tire, it only works if the gas stays in."

Gas can escape from improper sealant work, according to Burk. Ensuring that the sealant and desiccant used are compatible with the gas can reduce the risk of an IG failure. Equipment maintenance, operator training and regular testing also can decrease the likelihood of IG failure.

According to Burk, increased warranty costs, threat of litigation, loss of reputation and possible company shutdown also can result from improper gas fillings.
