Toshiba will provide new LED lighting for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa
Toshiba has announced an agreement with the Louvre Museum to replace part of the building's interior lighting with LEDs.
The upgrade will include specific exhibit lighting for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the Red Rooms, which display masterpieces by artists such as Jacques-Louis David, and the Napoleon Hall, the Louvre's main entrance.
The lighting installation for the Mona Lisa and the Red Rooms is scheduled to be complete by May 2013,while the Napoleon Hall ceiling and staircase lighting should be installed by mid 2014.
Edward Lees, product manager at Toshiba Information Systems(UK),said:"This partnership has pursued artistic integrity in the LED lighting from every conceivable perspective:the shape of the fixtures, illumination brightness, colour tone and installation angle,to achieve a lighting finish that respects the scenery of Paris."
The renovation project is a significant coup for Toshiba.Under the partnership the Japanese manufacturer has already illuminated parts of the Louvre's exterior.
During the first phase of the project,Toshiba designed new models of LED products for areas including the Colbert Pavilion,Pyramidion and Ieoh Ming Pei's Pyramid.
The installation of LED lighting for the Cour Napoleon was completed on 12 May,almost two years after the project commenced in June 2010.The renovation of LED lighting in the Cour Carre is set to be complete in 2013.
The upgrade for the exterior lighting has reduced the museum's annual power consumption by 73 per cent.
Toshiba's partnership with the Louvre will last until December 2023.
