Dutch city and municipality Arnhem has begun the four-year process of changing its streetlights to LEDs with the aim of making energy savings of up to 47%.
Road lights will be replaced with dimmable LEDs in this large-scale operation, which was recently started in Arnhem South and Groningensingel. In areas where the dimmable lights will be utilised, the level of lighting can be adjusted according to the flow of traffic and the intensity of the darkness.
Floriaan Tashche, commercial director of public lighting, said:Arnhem has for centuries been known as the green city on the Rhine.Philips is proud that the municipality is carrying on this tradition and investing in the future with sustainable LED lamps.
The municipality is working with over 80 organisations to achieve the changeover.
According to responsible municipal executive councillor Margreet Van Gastel,Arnhem is set to become a shining example as regards energy savings in public spaces.
Investment costs, which have not been disclosed, are expected to be recouped through the reduced costs of the energy consumption, maintenance and light replacement.LEDs do not have to be replaced as often as traditional lamps and last up to four times as long.
The municipality of Arnhem complies with the directives as held by the Dutch Illumination Foundation(NSVV).
