From the beginning of January, consumers will be able to compare and sort through all of the energy-saving light bulb options open to them by using a smartphone and tablet app.
Traditional bulbs are set to be phased out in favour of LED ceiling spotlights and energy-efficient options in the near future in Europe and the US and people will now have the option to see which products suit their homes.
Incandescent illuminations have begun to be phased out all over the world as authorities try and reduce the amount the amount of energy and electricity used in households.
The app - called Light Bulb Finder - is available for download via iTunes, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
All consumers need to do to use the app is to enter basic information about their current incandescent light bulbs and get instant recommendations or equivalents that will save energy.
For each recommendation, the app displays an image of the bulb, the financial payback, energy savings, estimated price and the environmental impact, which helps consumers to make more informed decisions.
If all households in the US alone switched from incandescent to energy-saving light bulbs, it is estimated that the energy equivalent of eliminating over 45 coal power plants and the greenhouse gas equivalent of taking 26 million cars off the road.
The app was developed by Eco Hatchery, which is a software and mobile app developer that specialises in residential energy efficiency and sustainability.
