American automaker General Motors (GM) is set to introduce its Chevrolet Corvette Stingray of 2015 with an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, 8L90.
The new transmission is designed and built by GM at its Toledo transmission facility in Ohio.
Based on eight-speed automatic transmission offered in 2015 Corvette Z06, the 8L90 transmission also has clutch and torque converter specifications matched to the torque capacity of the Stingray's LT1 6.2L naturally aspirated engine.
The transmission offers full manual control through the steering wheel paddles for performance driving.
Made with aluminum and magnesium for light weight, it features four gear sets and five clutches.
GM eight-speed automatic transmissions assistant chief engineer Bill Goodrich said that Corvette Stingray's new eight-speed automatic delivers the comfort and drivability of a true automatic transmission, as well as lightning-fast shifts and the manual control that enhance the performance-driving experience.
"It was designed to enhance the Stingray's driving experience, with performance on par with dual-clutch designs, but without sacrificing refinement," Goodrich added.
