According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in April this year exports of iron and steel scrap from the US amounted to 1.34 million mt, increasing by 10.58 percent from March and by 36.71 percent compared to April 2013. The value of these exports increased by 1.39 percent compared to March and by 21.14 percent year on year, amounting to $529.15 million.
Meanwhile, in the first four months of this year, exports of iron and steel scrap from the US totaled 4.77 million mt, decreasing by 25.09 percent year on year.
In April, Turkey was the leading scrap export destination of the US, importing 322,888 mt, surging by 540 percent compared to 50,451 mt in April 2013 and indicating a 10.23 decrease month on month. Turkey was followed by Taiwan and South Korea, which respectively received 284,437 mt and 148,122 mt of scrap from the US in the given month. Meanwhile, Turkey was also the leading scrap export destination of the US in the first four months, receiving 1.04 million mt, down 38.82 percent year on year.
