Seoul, South Korea – LG unveiled its third-generation L series of mid-tier Android smartphones, upgrading the hardware specs compared to its predecessors and bringing the Android 4.4 OS to the series.
The OS makes the three phones in the L Series III stand out in the mid-tier segment, LG said.
The phones also include the first L-series model with quad-core processor, and all three sport bigger screens than their predecessors.
All feature HSPA+ cellular data technology but no 4G LTE. Two models feature HSPA+21Mbps.
Although the phones lack LTE, LG has sold L-series phones in the past in the U.S., and marketers see rising demand for lower-cost 3G phones in the U.S. now that major carriers are promoting the option of buying unsubsidized phones as part of phone upgrade plans.
The new models are compatible with the first Quick Window cover designed for mid-tier LG phones. The protective cover, available in three colors, offers a see-through window that lets users see who is calling and check the time with the cover closed.
The L40, L70 and L90 phones will be displayed next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
The top-end L90 features a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 4.7-inch IPS (960 by 540) qHD display, 1GB RAM, 8GB memory, 8- and 1.3-megapixel cameras, 2,540 mAh removable battery and HSPA+21Mbps cellular data.
The L70 features a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 4.5-inch IPS (800 by 400) display, 1GB RAM, 4GB memory, 8-megapixel main camera, 5-megapixel or VGA front camera depending on the market, and HSPA+21Mbps data.
The L40 features a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 3.5-inch (480 by 320) display, 512MB RAM, 4GB memory, 3-megapixel camera, 1,700 mAh or 1,540 mAh removable battery depending on the market, and HSDPA+14.4Mbps cellular data.
The three previous L-series phones topped out with a 1GHz dual-core model with 768MB RAM and 4.3-inch display. The other models featured 4- and 3.2-inch displays.
