South Africa will stop imposing tariffs on poultry imports from the US, paving the way to resume trade in the country which had been closed for the past 15 years.
The two countries have reached an agreement to this effect, as per which, poultry shipments from the US will resume by the end of this year, Reuters reported.
South Africa imposes anti-dumping duties of over 100% on certain chicken products which are considered as trade-restrictive.
US Poultry & Egg Export Council and the National Chicken Council was quoted by Reuters as saying: "We look forward to working with our government and the South Africans on implementing this important agreement."
The countries have also agreed to resolve issues related to poultry, pork and beef exports.
Consumption of chicken is more in South Africa when compared to any other African country.
The local producers have been struggling to cater to increasing demand for chicken in the country.
