Nine Chinese official-led industrial standards were approved by Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and were fully implemented on January 1st, 2010. The standards include: Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices -- Blank Detail Specification for Power Light Emitting Diodes, Test Methods of Semiconductor Light Emitting Diodes, Sapphire Substrates for GaN-based Light-emitting Diode, Phosphors for Light Emitting Diodes, Technical Specification for Power Semiconductor Light-emitting Diode Chips, Test Methods of Semiconductor Light Emitting Diode Chips, Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices -- Blank Detail Specification for Lower-power Light-emitting Diodes and Series Program for Semiconductor Light Emitting Diodes, etc.
The nine standards cover LED materials, chips, devices and relative test methods. Among them, the Sapphire Substrates for GaN-based Light-emitting Diode specifies the parameter indicators, test method, physical dimension, experimental method and quality guarantee provision, etc of sapphire substrates for GaN-based lighting-emitting diodes. The Phosphors for Light Emitting Diodes stipulates the performance requirements, experimental method, testing rules, mark, package, transportation and stock, etc of phosphors for white LED; the standard also includes 5 marks of aluminate phosphor and 7 marks of silicate phosphor. As the technology and production of the new nitride phosphor need further improvement, it is excluded from the standard.
The implementation of the standards plays a significant role in regulating the semiconductor lighting market, perfecting the current institution, encouraging the trans-regional free competition of advanced enterprises and promoting the technical innovation. It will benefit the industry and market order.
It is predicted that the LED industry will be a hotspot in 2010. Large factories in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Chinese mainland launched LED TV successively. The market scale is about 15 million to 20 million sets, which drives the demand for high brightness blue LED. Moreover, Chinese government is expected to enhance the LED lighting demonstration project of “Ten Thousand LED lights in Ten Cities” to “Two Million LED Lights in Fifty Cities”. The LED industry shows an optimistic prospect in the TV and lighting fields with favorable news and great promise.
Before the general lighting market becomes prosperous, the LED application trend in recent years shows that the large-dimension display is the most thriving application. Presently, the application of LED in NB is frequent. However, promoted by Samsung, the LED TV becomes the LED application market with the highest potential. In 2010, the penetration rate is expected to reach 15%. The application in LED display is conservative in 2009 and 2010. However, in 2011, the penetration rate will exceed 20% driven by AUO and Innolux.
Personnel in the LED industry believe that LED TV and LED lighting will remain the two drives for the growth of LED in 2010.
One LED TV needs 500 to 800 LEDs, 30 times that of a laptop. Namely, when the penetration rate of LED TV reaches 3%, the LED consumption is the same as that of LED laptop with the penetration rate of 100%.
The scale of the LED TV market is estimated to be 15 million to 20 million in 2010. Compared with the over 2 million in 2009, there is six to nine times growth.
It is said that the LED TV shipment volume objective of Samsung is 10 million in 2010. Moreover, manufacturers of Japan, China, South Korea such as Sharp, AmTRAN, TCL and LG all express they will actively launch LED TV products. AmTRAN will present products with price competitiveness, which is expected to lead enterprises in the industry. The sharp decrease of the terminal sales price of LED TV will stimulate the rapid growth of the market.
Furthermore, according to the plan of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the project of “Ten Thousand LED lights in Ten Cities” will enter the second phase in 2010. The number of semiconductor lighting demonstration cities will be increased from 21 to 50 with 2 million LED lights. It also plans to attract the attention of the industry to the potential opportunities recently. Chinese government predicts that the penetration rate of Chinese LED lighting will reach 30% in 2013.
