CFS Has Imposed a Ban on Poultry Meat Imports From Parts of US and Turkey

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Hong Kong has imposed a ban on poultry meat imports from parts of US and Turkey over bird flu outbreak.

This comes after US state of Nebraska and World Organisation for Animal Health have confirmed outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in both the regions.

CFS has banned the import of poultry meat and products, including poultry eggs from Manisa Province in Turkey.

Commenting on the ban, CFS spokesman said: "The CFS has contacted the US and Turkish authorities over the issues and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks in the two countries. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation."

Last year, Hong Kong imported over 267 000 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 530 million poultry eggs from the US.

The country did not import poultry meat or poultry eggs from Turkey during the same period.
