Indian Expert Panel to Formulate The Textiles Policy Would Be Submitting Its Report

Indian Government’s expert panel to formulate the textiles policy would be submitting its report by the month of October, 2013.
 
Minister of State for Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi, in a written reply to Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Indian Parliament), said the Government constituted an expert committee in June 2013 to review the National Textiles Policy 2000, and formulate the policy for 2013, reports Business Standard quoting PTI.
 
The policy would give a direction to the textiles sector as a whole, and address the needs of the industry for 21st century trade operations, she added.
 
The expert panel is headed by Mr. Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC).
 
Referring to the Jute Packaging Material Act 1987, Ms. Lakshmi said, the matter regarding the compulsory use of jute packaging material for certain commodities for 2013-14 (July-June) is under consideration of the Government.
 
Last month, The High-Level Committee on Manufacturing (HLCM) meeting led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh constituted an inter-ministerial group to come up with possible solutions for the problems faced by India’s textiles industry.
 
The inter-ministerial panel would form a strategy to facilitate the rapid scaling of competitiveness of the garment segment of textile sector in the country through a comprehensive package of measures.
 
The elements of the strategy discussed at the HLCM meeting included having ready availability of work space, having adequate and comfortable housing for workers, having more flexible work timings, leveraging textile clusters and obtaining the best technologies.
