The 5th China-EU High Level Economic and Trade Dialogue held in Beijing co-chaired by Vice Premier Ma Kai and Vice President of European Commission Jyrki Katainen

Vice Premier Ma Kai and Vice President of European Commission Jyrki Katainen co-chaired the 5th China-EU High Level Economic and Trade Dialogue in Beijing on September 28.

Ma Kai said this year marks the 40 anniversary of the establishment of China-EU diplomatic relations. The two sides should genuinely implement the consensus reached by leaders of both sides, jointly deepen comprehensive, multi-layer and extensive mutually beneficial cooperation, and actively advance the EU-China comprehensive strategic partnership. At present, the recovery of the world economy is still complicated, so the EU and China should strengthen macropolicy communication and coordination and make joint efforts to promote the sustainable growth of regional and global economy. We should seek the “match point” of the Belt and Road initiative and European Investment Plan, strengthen international capacity cooperation, establish connectivity infrastructure and seek new cooperation areas in data economy and online security. The two sides have entered into a new stage of two-way investment from the single investment, and China expects a high level EU-China bilateral investment agreement to come out soon.

Katainen said the EU-China relations have been developing to a higher level with wider scale. Strong and solid trade and investment relations are the essence of EU-China ties. Against the uncertainty of the world economic development, the new European committee is committed to promoting the EU-China cooperation in investment and other areas.

During the dialogue, both sides expressed their confidence in the prospect of EU-China economic development. They actively support each other’s economic development planning and are willing to jointly create an open and fair environment for trade and investment. Great consensus were made on the matchmaking of Belt and Road initiative, international capacity cooperation, and European Investment Plan, and stepping up EU-China Investment Agreement negotiations and establishing EU-China investment funds. The two sides signed a MOU on the establishment of EU-China connectivity platform and a joint statement on EU-China strategic cooperation in 5G area.

Ma Kai and Katainen jointly attended the signing ceremony and the joint press conference.
