LED bulbs by an innovative manufacturer of high-quality moving lights, Robe, were responsible for the lighting for the Miss Universe Slovak Republic 2013 contest which took place last month at the Aegon Arena National Tennis Centre in Bratislava.
According to Robe, the designer Martin Kubanka used several different types of fixtures, including LED washes, spots, screens, beams and other sources, in order to create an aesthetically stunning - but also practical - design.
It needed to be visually impressive as the event is a national spectacle and one that, by definition, revolves around beauty. The design had to be interesting, with the lights moving and changing as the show progressed. However, it also needed to ensure all of the 12 potential Miss Universe candidates were sufficiently lit and with a quality of light that would be most flattering.
"We have a reputation here in Slovakia of producing one of the best Miss Universe live shows and telecasts, and each year we ‘up the ante’ getting more ambitious in our use of technology," the designer explained.
Project manager of the leading Slovakian technical provider Q-99, which supplied equipment for the show, Patrick Kvacka said they were "really pleased" with the results, commending the creativity of the project.
This is yet another example of how the adaptability and flexibility of LED lighting can be harnessed to create lighting schemes and solutions that are not only extremely beautiful but which also fulfill a very specific role or purpose.
Earlier this year, Jason Ng - marketing communications specialist at Ex-Or, a company that has designed, manufactured and installed lighting management systems for almost 30 years - spoke of the need for businesses to also be flexible with their lighting.
He commented: "Changes to building use and layout, together with damaged or ineffective equipment and control settings not optimised for comfort or energy saving, can all contribute to a significant increase in energy use and cost."
