A BTU is essentially the amount of heat energy that it takes to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree F. In the U. S., air conditioner manufacturers also describe air conditioning power in terms of tons and watts. A ton refers to the cooling power of 2000 lbs. of ice melting over a 24-hour period. One ton is equal to 12, 000 BTU per hour or 3510 watts. A typical industrial air conditioner will usually have a capacity of about 60 ton/180kW. Make sure that the air conditioner you are considering is strong enough to fulfill your needs.
