After five months of LED light bulb marketplace research, LED Light Review, an emerging expert in LED light bulb consumer communications, is challenging the LED light bulb industry to solve a critical problem facing the consumer adoption of LED light bulbs; model number confusion.
Gordon White, Co-Founder of LED Light Review, explains, "A Toshiba LED light bulb recently reviewed on LED-Light-Review.com has three model number designations; 8A19/27F-UP, 218-50449, and LDAB0827WE6USD. As a consumer, what is the name of the bulb? What bulb do I refer to a friend for purchase? We believe LED light bulb model number confusion is a serious threat to the consumer adoption of LED light bulbs."
LED Light Review has found the same problem with practically every other LED light bulb manufacturer including Philips, GE, Sylvania, Feit, Ecosmart, Utilitech, Maxxima, Lemnis Lighting, G7 Power, and EarthLED.
Gordon continues, "Most LED light bulb retailers currently use the last five or six numbers of a LED light bulb's UPC (Universal Product Code). Unfortunately, some retailers use five UPC numbers and some use six. Furthermore, some retailers use a dash in the UPC number, and some do not.
"This confusion allows different retailers to list the same bulbs multiple times and side-by-side on consumer websites like Amazon. For example, the Philips L-Prize winning LED light bulb is sold by retailers as the 420224, the 42022-4, and the 423244/42324-4 (with different packaging).
"We recommend that the American Lighting Association, the trade association representing the lighting industry, look into this important issue and champion a voluntary industry-wide LED light bulb model number standard. The time to act is now before the LED light bulb industry earns a consumer reputation similar to the mattress industry. We can do better."
