A pendant light, sometimes called a drop or suspender, is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling usually suspended by a cord, chain, or metal rod. It's used in two ways - in multiples hung in a series or as a single light fixture. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are ideal for general, task or decorative lighting.
Pendant lights with shades pointing up (uplight) are designed for ambient light, and those with shades pointing down (downlight) provide task light. Use pendant lights in the bathroom, bedroom, dining room, foyer, hallway, kitchen, living room, game room or bar for ambient lighting and in the dining room, kitchen or game room for task lighting.
The first question that should be asked when a person is looking for a new pendant light is where it will end up. A pendant light that might look fabulous over a casual kitchen island could look far less attractive when placed in a formal dining room. Pendant lights are certainly attractive items with a lot of aesthetic appeal, but they also serve a very practical purpose and illuminate the space. If space is limited, amini pendant light could be ideal, and if there can be no installation to the ceiling, a track light fixture pendant could be more suitable.
Since pendant lights are typically smaller and placed in sets, it is important to follow general lighting rules to avoid creating poor lighting. An odd number of pendants is preferable to an even amount. Typically, 60-75 watt equivalent lights are needed for every 20 inches of counter space.
