The Type of Bed May Have an Effect on Sleep Satisfaction

Specialty sleep sets soar when it comes to consumers' sleep satisfaction. Innerspring beds, not quite as much.

In a nutshell, those are some of the key findings from a consumer survey that Furniture/Today undertook with its research partner, Apartment Therapy.

We think it's useful to combine the "excellent" and "good" scores for each bed type, as those reflect consumers who are well satisfied with the sleep they are getting on various types of beds. The highest combined score goes to memory foam, at 92%, followed by latex foam at 89%, hybrid beds (which combine innersprings and specialty foams) at 88%, airbeds at 81% and innerspring beds at just 69%.

The message there is clear: Consumers who own specialty sleep sets are quite pleased with the kind of sleep those beds deliver. And even in the innerspring category, the 69% overall satisfaction level, while lagging the other satisfaction levels, is still relatively high.

Applying the findings

This is great information to reinforce a consumers' decision to buy a specialty sleep set. And that's a good thing for retail sales associates to do, as specialty sleep sets typically carry much higher price tags than do innerspring beds.

Some note that innerspring beds cover a much wider range of prices than do the specialty sleep sets, and thus can't be expected to deliver the same levels of satisfaction scores as specialty beds costing three, four, five or even 10 times as much.

Also, it's important to note that not all consumers may know exactly what hybrid beds consist of. While the hybrid term is gaining acceptance within the bedding industry, it is still not a common mattress term with all consumers. The sleep satisfaction scores for hybrid beds must be considered in that light.
