The Introduction of Hammock

Tags: Hammock

Many people consider a hammock as only an accessory for their yard, deck, or porch. Some people consider laying in a hammock a "reward", only for use after tasks such as mowing the lawn, weeding the garden, or repainting the fence are completed. But hammocks can offer much more & the number of ways you can use a hammock is limited only by your imagination!

Some of the more common uses for hammocks, other than the obvious, include using a hammock for a bed, for camping and hiking, and while boating. We have also done extensive research on the history of the hammock, which has come a long way since it's humble beginning over 1000 years ago. Where will your imagination lead you?

Hammock for my bed?

Did you know that today, millions of people use a hammock as their bed? We receive several emails and phone calls each day where someone inquires about using a hammock instead of a mattress and frame.

Most beds that people sleep on actually create tension in the body. When you lie on a surface, such as a bed mattress, all of your body weight must be collected somewhere. These places that support all of the weight are called "pressure points". These pressure points are the reason we have to rotate and change positions during the night to get comfortable. Obviously, this detracts from a restful nights sleep.

What if you didn't have to rotate in the middle of the night?

Hammocks induce a relaxed state of both mind and body by working from a principle called "Weight distribution". While all hammocks are beneficial for relaxing the body and mind, three hammocks in particular are the most popular for sleeping and other indoor uses. They are the Mayan, the Nicaraguan, and the Brazilian hammocks; all of which do not have spreader bars. The popularity of these hammocks is based on two characteristics. First, each of these hammocks demonstrates the highest level of weight distribution possible. When lying in the hammock, you feel as a sense of weightlessness or 'zero gravity'. Second, these hammocks are noted for their simplicity to hang or take down and their conservation of space.

People in Central and South America and other locations around the world have used hammocks as a bed for over a thousand years! Isn't it time you found out what you're missing out on?

Hammocks are Ideal for Hiking & Camping

If you're a typical backpacker/hiker, you probably pack and unpack your bag 2-3 times (or more) before embarking out into the wilds. The biggest dilemma we hear pondered is whether to compromise comfort or weight.

Usually, it comes down to a weight vs. pain-pleasure ratio that varies from individual to individual. Some items are considered necessities - regardless of weight - and are unavoidable. Why pack a tent and Therma-rest, when you can pack a portable, lightweight camping hammock?

A single size hammock weighs 1-3 lbs. This will save and additional 3-5 lbs. over a typical tent setup. That leaves a lot more room for essentials like first aid kits! A lightweight tarp and a length of light cord will provide protection against the rain and suspend you above the torrential flash flood plains that many of us have endured on those "character building" trips!

So, just when you thought those other camping accessories were essential and impossible to leave behind - think again! Try a hammock and experience a whole new level of lightweight backpacking in uncompromising and exceptional comfort.
