A commercial poultry flock in Minnesota was tested positive for a strain of H5N2 avian influenza, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This comes after two other farms in Pope and Lac qui Parle counties of western Minnesota were found to be infected by avian influenza.

Around 39,000 turkeys affected by H5N2 flu will be slaughtered to prevent the spread of the disease, the Associated Press reported.

USDA has quarantined the infected poultry farm in Stearns County, which is one of the state's top chicken and egg producer.

Over 40 countries have imposed a ban on poultry imports from Minnesota since the virus was first detected in the state.

The USDA is developing a vaccine to protect poultry from new strains of avian flu, including H5N2. However, it currently has no plans to distribute it yet.
