Renault-Nissan Alliance is planning to introduce a feature, "single-lane control," that will allow the cars to drive autonomously on highways in conditions like stop-and-go traffic.

Following the introduction of single-lane control in 2018, the company aims to introduce vehicles with "multiple-lane control," which will allow the vehicle to analyze hazards and change lanes during highway driving.

In 2020, Renault-Nissan Alliance will introduce "intersection autonomy", which will allow the car to navigate in city intersections and heavy urban traffic without driver intervention.

For the past couple of years, the automaker has been focusing on vehicle safety and the company highlighted that injuries in Nissan vehicles in Japan decreased 61% in 20 years, while fatal and serious injuries in Renault vehicles in France also decreased 80% in 15 years.

In 2014, Renault-Nissan "converged" engineering organizations of both the companies.

Engineers of both the companies have been working together to develop the next-generation technologies which is available for each company and across all brands to use.

Renault-Nissan Alliance chairman Carlos Ghosn said: "Renault-Nissan Alliance is deeply committed to the twin goals of 'zero emissions and zero fatalities.

"That's why we are developing autonomous driving and connectivity for mass-market, mainstream vehicles on three continents."

In an attempt to boost its connected vehicles and mobility services the company has hired technology executive Ogi Redzic to lead the global car group's connected car initiative.

The former senior vice president of automotive at Nokia HERE will join the alliance as the Senior Vice President of connected vehicles and mobility services at Renault-Nissan Alliance.
