German automobile major Opel will arm its passenger cars from next month with Opel OnStar, a personal connectivity and service assistant touted to offer a safer and comfortable driving.

The application will be donned by the next generation Opel Astra, set to premier at International Motor Show in Frankfurt slated to be held between September 17 and 27. Such a facility could also be availed with Insignia, Mokka and Zafira Tourer in certain regions.

Opel Group CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann said: "Connectivity is one of Opel's unique selling points as seen with our award-winning IntelliLink infotainment system. Opel OnStar, for which we have already received a Connected Car Award, is further proof that we want to deliver trendsetting innovations in connectivity to a wider audience.

"Opel OnStar is a ground-breaking technology: It will add a new level of safety to our vehicles and at the same time make driving more comfortable. The direct dialogue with our customers will create stronger ties with the brand. All this will convince even more new buyers that Opel is the right choice."

The application promises a 10-fold rise from that of 3G technologies, coupled with an increased responsiveness and capability to back voice and data simultaneously. Powered by a built-in 4G LTE, it offers a slew of applications riding high on in-vehicle communication and entertainment capabilities.

Swinging into action a Wi-Fi hotspot, it can help connect seven devices and thus, aid people towards staying in touch with their family members through social media and avail entertainment packages containing games and movies. The 4G LTE facility would be launched in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands.

Besides, on the safety front, Opel OnStar will get an automatic alert in the event of an airbag deployment. After that Opel OnStar Advisor would rush in help after determining the exact location of the vehicle under distress.
