Businesses Are Being Encouraged to Adopt Energy Efficient Lighting

Businesses will be encouraged to look at how they can improve the efficiency of their lighting as part of an energy audit programme launched by two banks.

Natwest and RBS will offer their audits through Mentor, the RBS Group’s business consultancy service. It follows a pilot of 60 businesses who have an annual energy spend of between 10,000 pounds and 200,000 pounds After the audit the businesses had an average potential saving of 23,000 pounds.

Ian Burrow, head of agriculture and renewable energy for commercial banking at NatWest and RBS, said: “The audits look at the behaviours of businesses from helping them tackle the small things like encouraging staff to switch off lights and appliances, as well as implementing energy saving initiatives such as better insulation and equipment to regulate energy flow into buildings.”

The audit offer comes as the latest figures on the Government’s Green Deal show a poor take-up in its first year. Lighting is not part of the deal for households, although it is included in the commercial sector.
