Qualcomm'S RF Front End Chip-Set Could Trigger a Big Payday for a Small UK Company

Qualcomm’s RF front end chip-set could trigger a big payday for a small UK company.

Nujira Payday as Qualcomm Enters Rf Market

Last week Qualcomm announced its entry into the RF front end business with a chipset using a technique called envelope tracking.

Envelope tracking was invented by the UK company Nujira which has filed 200 patents on the technology.

Nujira has said it is waiting to see product coming out using the technology. It says 12 chip-set vendors have taped out 4G modems using envelope tracking.

“We know there are two ways to do envelope-tracking, our patented way and one other less efficient way,” says Nujira CEO Tim Haynes, “we will be looking at these other vendors’ chips very closely with an oscilloscope and a microscope when they come on the market.”

Nujira has taken out insurance to pay the cost of any lawsuits associated with pressing its claims against companies which don’t license its technology but infringe its patents.

“We are the dominant holder of IPR for envelope tracking and the acknowledged thought leader of the industry,” says Haynes, “we believe patent protection will be a key weapon in determining who will be the 800lb gorilla in the ET market.”
