India-based Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has opened a new research and development (R&D) centre for two wheelers in Pune, India, for which the company has invested Rs1bn ($18.05m).

Over the next five years, the company is also planning to invest Rs5bn ($90.27m) in the R&D for its two-wheeler business.

The company has also unveiled two new engines developed at the facility - a 110 cc and a 300 cc liquid cooled one for the R&D centre, and also aiming to launch three new motorcycles during this financial year.

The new R&D centre, which has been recognised by the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR), will enable Mahindra two wheelers to undertake in-house design and development of engine technology for its motorcycles as well.

Mahindra group vice chairman and MD Anand Mahindra said that the new facility will enable the company to harness the technology of the future to create tomorrow's products.

"It will allow us to design in India, for the discerning Indian consumer," Mahindra said.

"The Micro Hybrid technology developed for the new Duro DZ is a clear validation of the value it offers the business."
