Volkswagen Unveils Production Plans for I. D. Buzz Concept Car

Volkswagen’s American subsidiary will now be mass producing its ID Buzz electric concept car, which was showcased at the North American International Auto Show, held in Detroit, Michigan earlier this year.

The new ID Buzz electric vehicle is expected to arrive at Volkswagen’s dealerships in 2022. The automaker plans to target the markets of North America, Europe and China.

The company claims to have received several letters and emails from its customers asking it to build this car.

The ID Buzz electric vehicle is based on the old school Volkswagen’s microbus concept and over the decades it is claimed to have become part of Californian lifestyle. Now, it is being reintroduced in the form of an electric vehicle.

Following the lines of concept car that was showcased, the production model of the new vehicle, will also have its batteries mounted on the vehicle floor. The electric drive components including the electric motor, power electronics are claimed to not take up much space and. The vehicle is also expected to have long wheelbase with short overhangs, while offering spacious interior.

Volkswagen, North American Region CEO Hinrich J. Woebcken said: “We are delighted that our parent company has taken the decision to produce the I.D. BUZZ. This vehicle is the perfect balance between emotion, usability and sustainability, while also showcasing our technological leadership.

“The high seating position, cargo capacity, overall versatility and all-wheel drive option packaged into such an appealing design is just what our customers want from us. And it’s the perfect fit for the zero-emissions American lifestyle.”

The new ID Buzz is not just for people, but can also take the role of a commercial vehicle which can transport freight and cargo.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Eckhard Scholz said: "Along with a minibus version, we'll also be offering an I.D. BUZZ CARGO variant for zero-emissions delivery of goods.

"With Level 3 autonomous capability, this is an ideal concept for an electric van, particularly for delivering packages and goods to the inner cities."
