HKScan, a Finnish manufacturer of meat foods and products, has opened its expanded Tabasalu facility, which will handle slaughter, cutting, deboning and processing of poultry meat operations for the Baltic region.

Starting from 2014, the facility will take over the production of poultry products previously manufactured at the Loo facility near Tallinn.

HKScan has been upgrading the Tabasalu facility over the past few years, with an investment of €13.5m. The new production lines are due to be installed by the end of this year.

The investment will allow the company's Tallegg brand to double its Baltic production capacity and cater to the increasing demand for poultry products in Estonia and export markets.

The expanded facility will produce various products primarily for the Baltic countries, including Tallegg fresh chicken products, smoked poultry products, marinated and oven products.

HKScan Baltics general manager Teet Soorm said, "Bringing added capacity, this investment also enhances our technological capabilities, supporting the development of the Tallegg brand and improving the quality and shelf life of our products."

"The modernised facilities offer better working conditions for our employees, as process automation has eliminated the need for heavy manual handling," Soorm added.

HKScan stated that certain primary units at the Loo facility will continue to operate, which include poultry feed factory, chicken hatchery, chicken farm and egg production.
