ConAgra Grocery Products Will Pay $11.2m in Fine for Shipping Contaminated Peanut Butter

ConAgra Grocery Products will pay $11.2m in fine for shipping contaminated peanut butter that caused salmonella poisoning across the nation from 2006 through 2007.

This comes after a lawsuit was filed against ConAgra Grocery Products claiming that the company violated the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

Food and Drug Administration Acting Commissioner Stephen Ostroff said: "US consumers expect and deserve the highest standards of food safety and integrity.

"Today's plea agreement reflects the FDA's commitment to ensuring the safety of the nation's food supply and demonstrates that those who risk the health of Americans will be held accountable."

The company agreed that it introduced Peter Pan and private label peanut butter contaminated with salmonella into interstate commerce during the 2006 through 2007 outbreak.

Manufactured at the company's Sylvester peanut butter plant, Peter Pan and private label peanut butter were found to be linked with the outbreak.

The company then voluntarily ceased production at the plant in 2007, and recalled all peanut butter manufactured there since January 2004.

Over 700 salmonellosis cases were reported associated with the consumption of ConAgra's contaminated peanut butter.
