Operations After Fire Is Restarted by Turkish Acrylic Unit

The Turkish company Aksa Acrylic Chemical Industry Co, Ltd, the world’s leading producer of acrylic fibre, has recommenced operations after the fire accident at the manufactured product storage area located at Yalova in Turkey recently, a company representative told fibre2fashion.

Earlier, at a press conference, CEO of Akkok group of companies, of which Aksa is a subsidiary, Mr. Ahmet Dorduncu said the fire accident at the chemical unit of Aksa was immediately intervened by the technical teams and was taken under control.

He informed that the fire incident was limited to the storage area of acrylic fibre bales ready for shipment to the textile manufacturing clients and the production unit was not impacted by the incident.

There was no fire at any other chemical storage and processing units at the plant. So there is no danger for the local communities and the Yalova people, he added.

During the catastrophic earthquake of August 1999, the chemical plant was damaged resulting in leakage of toxic acrylonitile from the plant and it affected the life of people staying nearby the unit.

Several people suffered from cancer and chest infection due to the leakage in the chemical plant.

The company has a market share of 13.2 percent for acrylic fibre globally and it has 72 percent share in domestic market.

Besides acrylic fibre, the company manufactures carbon fibre, tows and tops for yarn spinning and nonwovens.
