Samsung Planning Familiar New Version of Galaxy S7

Samsung may be about to release a new version of the Galaxy S7 in a very familiar colour.

A new report suggests Samsung is planning to sell a glossy black version of the Samsung Galaxy S7. If that sounds familiar, it’s probably because Apple recently introduced a glossy black version of its new iPhone 7, with the colour proving an immediate hit – units sold out very quickly.

According to The Investor, a business blog published by the Korea Herald, Samsung will launch the new handset early next month, just in time for the Christmas shopping season.

But the news is still curious, as Samsung already offers the Galaxy S7 in an Onyx Black colour. However, just like the iPhone 7 is available in two black variants, there’s no reason why Samsung couldn’t launch an even shinier black equivalent.

There’s also added incentive to launch new colours for the Galaxy S7. After the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, Samsung has been scrambling to boost sales of the Galaxy S7. The company’s recent introduction of a new Coral Blue colour for the Galaxy S7 was clear evidence of this, especially as that was the most popular colour available on the Note 7.

If you’ve already forgotten, Samsung stopped making the Galaxy Note 7 last month and recalled all devices, after an internal investigation uncovered a battery flaw that was causing some users’ handsets to catch fire. Note 7 owners are now being urged to turn their devices off indefinitely, and Samsung no longer sells the phone.

So an attempt to peddle more Galaxy S7 devices with new colour options right before Christmas is a sensible ploy by Samsung, and it may help Samsung’s turnover as the world awaits the Galaxy S8, expected to arrive in late February.

We’ve asked Samsung for comment, and received the following response from a spokesperson: "Samsung does not comment on rumour or speculation."
