Australians Consume Large Amounts of Junk Food, Says New Study

A recent study in Australia reveals that majority of the people consume three-times more junk food than the recommended daily intake.

The study was conducted by Australia's national science agency Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

As part of the study, diet of over 40,000 people was surveyed based on the variety, frequency and quantity of the essential food groups as well as individual attributes such as age and gender.

The study found that people in the country consume 32kg of chocolate on an average every year.

The average diet quality score of people completing the survey was 61/100.

Discretionary or junk foods contain high amount of sugar, saturated fats and/or alcohol and have low essential nutrients.

CSIRO Nutrition and Health research director Professor Manny Noakes said: "What we're finding is people are having larger portions of junk food, more often. This type of food is no longer just an indulgence, its become mainstream and Australians are eating it each and every day.

"In order to improve your diet quality, people need to cut back on the consumption of junk food, and start to focus on eating smaller portions.

"They also need to be more mindful of every bite they take by eating more slowly and consciously."
