After a Five-Year Gap, The Iconic Blackpool Tower Has Been Illuminated to Light up The Sky

After a five-year gap, the iconic Blackpool Tower has been illuminated to light up the sky.

Indeed, on Tuesday (February 12th) the new LED light bulbs were switched on in celebratory fashion to mark that 10,000 old energy guzzling pygmy bulbs along the Tower's legs had been replaced by much more efficient LED lighting.

The burst of colour will be seen across the whole resort for the days around Valentine's Day.

Head of illuminations on the project Richard Ryan told the Blackpool Gazette that the new lighting system helps to bring the Tower into the 21st century.

He added that changing the bulbs had been a difficult task as temperatures at the top fell to six degrees C this week.

"This is another fantastic moment for Blackpool - the only town where a structure like this is illuminated so beautifully. It is to the town's credit that it still wants to do something like this," Mr Ryan continued.

An illuminated heart makes the Tower the most colourful it has ever been and this contains 900 LED lights alone.

Residents and councillors alike were delighted with the results of the new illumination as it helped give Blackpool a real focal point, especially during the evening.

The whole structure now boasts 5,508 LED lights and this well help to save the council huge amounts of money on their energy bills in the long run.

Cabinet member for tourism and culture at the Blackpool Council Graham Cain told the news provider: "Since the top of the Tower was first lit up, we’ve received great feedback saying just how spectacular it looks, which is a testament to the hard work that has been put in."

There are a huge number of councils up and down the country that are investing in LED lighting as a way of saving money.

One such authority is the Bromley Council, which recently stated that around half of the borough's 27,000 street lamps will be replaced to try to save valuable money, as well as reducing its carbon footprint.
