General Motors Restart Indonesian Car Factory to Produce Chevrolet Spin MPV

Since the termination of production and operation in 2005, General Motors (GM) restarts the car factory in Bekasi, Indonesia recently, to produce Chevrolet Spin MPV.

Bekasi factory’s floor area is 58,000 square meters and the total area is 11 hectares. It has 550 staff. GM plans to enlarge its total number of employees to 800 in December, 2013.

In order to restart Bekasi factory, GM invests 150 million US dollars. The factory produced 3 Spin models in July last year during the preparatory stage. The factory has prepared well for commercial production this week and its automobile production capacity will reach 40,000 per year.

Martin Apfel, GM’s president in Southeast Asia, said that GM plans to build Indonesia as the Southeast Asian market production base, and restarting Bekasi factory is a part of the great plan. The previous model produced by this factory was Blazer SUV. However, the model performed not well into the market and didn’t win much market shares.

According to the data of Indonesian Gaikindo, Indonesian new car sales totally arrived 1,116,230 in 2012, up 24.8% year on year. The new car sales in January this year continue the growth trend of last year, and reached 96,656, increased 26.5% year on year.
