The Toyota Mark X G Sports Carbon Roof concept has been unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, revealing a somewhat obviously named carbonfibre-roofed version of a Japanese domestic market-only rear-wheel-drive sedan.

Weighing six kilograms less than the standard steel roof, and lowering the Mark X’s centre of gravity, the roof is Toyota’s first use of the lightweight material since production of the $700,000 carbonfibre-bodied Lexus LFA supercar ceased production in December.

Riding on the same platform as the previous-generation Lexus GS, the Toyota Mark X G Sports is powered by a 235kW/340Nm 3.5-litre V6 engine running through a six-speed automatic transmission.

With the Toyota Mark X G Sports Carbon Roof concept – and the soon to be revealed Toyota Furia concept- both employing carbonfibre elements, the Japanese manufacturer’s own carbonfibre facility located at its Motomachi assembly plant in Toyota City appears likely to be called upon once again for future production models.
