General Motors Plans to Lose 15% Weight of 2016 New Model

Dan Ai Kesen, CEO of General Motors, announced recently, the company plans to lose 15% weight of the 2016 new model in the North America.

In an energy meeting held in Huston not long ago, Ai Kesen said, General Motors’s 2016 new model compared to the current car model, curb weight will lose about 15%. According to the estimate of GM, as car’s curb weight loses 10%, the fuel consumption will reduce 6.5%.

In order to realize the goal, GM is trying to develop new materials and technology, such as carbon fiber, nano steel and aluminum structure resistance spot welding.

In addition, GM losing car’s weight will not satisfy the car’s other functions. Ai Kesen pointed out: “If you think that we will ignore the safety, comfort and power due to the weight loss, you can release yourself.”

He took an example as follows: as for the similar specifications, 2013 Cadillac ATS is lighter than BMW 3 Series. However, many GM’s models are heavier than the rivals, which is not do good to fuel economy, so the company take the weight loss as an important goal.
