State Transport Authorities Have Placed Orders for More Than 4,000 Buses From Tata Motors

As part of the Indian government's second phase of national urban renewal mission, state transport authorities have placed orders for more than 4,000 buses from Tata Motors.

The Economic Times cited Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles Executive Director Ravi Pisharody as saying that the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport has ordered for 30 units of hybrid buses, making it the first order for the company to supply hybrid buses in India.

According to reports, the orders have come at a time when Tata Motors is trying to turn around its local operations.

Slow economic growth pulled down its commercial vehicle sales in the country, and Tata Motors' commercial vehicle sales dropped 17% to 286,263 units during the first 11 months of the present fiscal year.

Pisharody added: "MHCV has been growing for some time now. We are expecting our topline to post significant gain in FY'16 on a possible turnaround in the domestic market as demand has started pouring in.

"There is some concern for the light commercial vehicles segment that continues to struggle on low demand, even though it (demand)also seems to have bottomed out as of now."

Tata Motors' global sales in February rose 5% year on year 83,951 including Jaguar Land Rover, while its cumulative sales for this fiscal dropped 4% to 877,968.
