McLaren GT, the GT race car manufacturing unit of McLaren, has unveiled the McLaren 650S GT3 at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The second-generation GT3 car, which builds on the successful 12C GT3, will participate in the GT3 global championships from the 2015 season, the company said.

McLaren 650S GT3 is said to be built based on the recently unveiled McLaren 650S, and features lightweight carbon fiber MonoCell chassis with aluminum front and rear sub frames, left hand drive, FIA-approved safety roll cage and air-jacking system.

It is powered by 3.8-litre McLaren V8 twin turbo 'M838T' engine and produces around 500PS power.

The new version uses race-tuned suspension system with a 52mm wider track compared with the 12C GT3.

McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said: "The McLaren 650S GT3 is to GT racing what the 650S is to McLaren Automotive, with the new car improving on all areas of a strong existing product, and making it more engaging at the same time."

McLaren GT managing director Andrew Kirkaldy said: "The 650S GT3 is a natural progression of an already successful racer, but we have looked at all the different areas where we could possibly make even the slightest incremental improvement."

"The revised aerodynamic profile looks much more purposeful, and we have managed to incorporate increased levels of cooling without any detriment to performance," Kirkaldy said.

Testing of the 650S GT3 is underway with customer car production set to commence later this year.
