Karro Food Ceased Its Slaughter and Butchery Operations at Its Wiveliscombe Site

Karro Food, a UK-based pork processor, has ceased its slaughter and butchery operations at its Wiveliscombe site in Somerset, putting 93 jobs at risk.

The move follows an extensive review of the company's operations with staff and trade union representatives.

The company retained 38 jobs at the facility for its curing and foodservice sales departments, which would continue to operate, and transferred the closure-affected staff to one of its other sites.

Karro CEO Seamus Carr said, "This has been a very difficult decision and has been taken only after extensive consultation with Unite and site employees, during which we exhausted all other options.

"Unfortunately, our Wiveliscombe slaughter and butchery operation did not have the necessary scale to operate profitably, and so proceeding with these changes was critical to ensure our continued viability and growth, and safeguard other jobs across our business."

In August, the company announced plans to end slaughter and butchery operations at the site. It secured a £60m funding from finance firm GE Capital to invest further in its operations and strengthen its presence in the market.

Karro Food was formed following a management buyout of Vion's pork business unit in January when the Dutch firm had withdrawn from the UK operations.
