German Automobile Manufacturer BMW Has Recalled 2930 Vehicles in Australia

German automobile manufacturer BMW has recalled 2930 vehicles in Australia to fix a problem in turbocharged six cylinder models.

The recall affects BMW's eight models including 35i versions of the X3 and X5 SUVs, as well as the 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 5 Series GT passenger cars manufactured between October 2009 and April 2012.

According to BMW, attachment of the VANOS variable valve timing unit to the vehicle could lead to slowing down or stopping unexpectedly resulting in increased accident risk.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a recall notice that the bolted connection on the housing of the variable valve timing unit (VANOS) adjustment units may become loose.

"As a result the units may develop an internal oil leak and then no longer adjust quickly enough due to the reduced oil pressure," ACCC noted.

"The vehicle then goes into engine emergency mode and the engine warning light is permanently lit."

The recall also affects both single- and twin-turbo versions of the inline 3L six-cylinder petrol engine.
