The Introduction of The Leap Motion Controller

The Leap Motion controller, a hands-controlled, touch-free device, is now available for $80. The user can point, pinch, swipe, and more to manipulate the program on the computer screen before them-- it is intended to take the place of a mouse. The Leap Motion controller website boasts that now users can interact with [their] computer in real, natural ways" instead of clamping their hand around a computer mouse.

Reviews of the controller laud its tracking precision, minimalist design, and innovation-- but not many speak of its applicability. The Leap Motion controller already appears to be cordoned off to the use of "gaming device." Brian Westover of PCMagazine.com says in his review, "The Leap Motion Controller is one of the coolest devices I've used, period. This is clearly a step forward in interface technology, and it's jaw-droppingly cool. But as a consumer product, the Leap Motion Controller is definitely still a work in progress. It's cool in certain applications—the orientation demo alone made me giddy with geeky excitement—but so far the practical uses are few and far between."

As it stands on the market, the Leap Motion is an innovative tool with much potential for future development. Perhaps with more manipulation, the controller will revolutionize gaming and perhaps even programs in the working world. But for now, it's a cool and not-so-serious gadget to give the computer user searching for a more futuristic experience.
