EU Contemplates Simplifying Import Approval Process

The EU plans to empower member states to grant admission to controversial genetically modified foods and animal feed by simplifying the import approval process.

The move is expected to grant more freedom to enable entry of GM products into the 28-nation bloc where previously, the products were blocked due to opposition or differences among member states.

This comes after a recently approved legislation by the European Parliament earlier this year in January, which allows member states to decide for themselves whether to cultivate Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) after years of bitter dispute.

A proposal to this effect is expected to come out on April 22 from the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, reveals sources.

Acceptance of the proposal could clear way for import licenses currently blocked for 19 GMOs including food, animal feed and flowers.

It would also lead to smooth entry of products into the single EU market if they are deemed safe by the European Food Safety Agency, making life easier for European Commission.

Currently, only Monsanto's brand of corn GMO MON810 is allowed to be cultivated in the EU that is grown in Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic.
