Formula E to Start Driverless Electric Car Racing Series

Formula One racing’s greener alternative Formula E has collaborated with automaker Kinetik to introduce the first of its kind driverless car racing series called Roborace.

Roborace is expected to run its races before each scheduled Formula E event starting next 2016-17 Formula E season.

There will be ten teams with two cars, and the teams will race against each other on the same Formula E circuits.

According to Formula E, the cars will be more or less similar to each other so companies will have to come up with better technology including better algorithms and artificial intelligence.

Kinetik founder Denis Sverdlov said: "We passionately believe that, in the future, all of the world's vehicles will be assisted by AI and powered by electricity, thus improving the environment and road safety.

"It's a global platform to show that robotic technologies and AI can co-exist with us in real life.

"Thus, anyone who is at the edge of this transformation now has a platform to show the advantages of their driverless solutions and this shall push the development of the technology."

Formula E did not reveal about the details of the teams or developers but it said that one of the teams will be a "crowd-sourced community team," made up by "enthusiastic software and technology experts.

The vehicles are expected to have speed of more than 300km/h which would make the vehicles faster than the ones that race in the E series that attains top speed of about 140 miles per hour.

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said: ROBORACE is an open challenge to the most innovative scientific and technology-focused companies in the world.

"It is very exciting to create a platform for them to showcase what they are capable of and I believe there is great potential for us to unearth the next big idea through the unique crowd-sourced contest."
