US Unveiled Thursday a $500 Million Revamp of Its Clairton

United States Steel Corp publicly unveiled Thursday a $500 million revamp of its Clairton, Pennsylvania coke works that aims to reduce pollution.

The new coke battery has been operational since November 2012.

In 2008, the company announced plans to spend $1.1 billion to shutter three oven batteries built in 1955 that were contributing to the Pittsburgh-area pollution problem, but instead, US Steel built one new battery and plans to build two new quench towers to reduce pollution at the other two facilities.

The investment is expected to help the Clairton plant meet federal air quality standards two years sooner than previously predicted.
