Atlantic Packaging Plans to Re-Open Its Whitby Ontario Mill

Canadian packaging products company Atlantic Packaging has announced plans to re-open its Whitby Ontario Mill in March 2013, which is the company’s second paper mill to open in the last six years.

The mill, which was formerly a newsprint mill, has been upgraded with new technology that will enable the company to produce 100% recycled lightweight paper used to manufacture corrugated packaging products.

Atlantic Packaging president Dave Boles said the term lightweight has been mainly used in reference to the basis weight of the paper in North America.

"What we're talking about is a disruptive technology that is capable of producing low basis weights (lighter paper) with sustainability and strength characteristics unlike anything in corrugated packaging today," Boles said.

Atlantic opened the New Forest Mill in 2006 in Quebec as part of a joint venture with corrugated packaging company Mitchel-Lincoln.

The key business divisions of Atlantic Packaging include corrugated and flexible packaging, displays, supply and inventory management, mills and recycling.
