Mad Cow Disease Spreads in Norway

Norway recorded its first ever case of mad cow disease, but at the same time allayed public fears saying the incident was isolated and it is still safe to consume beef and drink milk.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority says that tests conducted at a British laboratory confirmed the disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in a 15-year-old cow, reports Reuters.

Citing the case as atypical, the authority says that there had been no transmission via the feed supply and it was not associated with any wider outbreak.

Norwegian authorities assure that cows that had come in contact with the dead animal would also be slaughtered.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority says""The discovery of BSE has no impact on food safety and it is just as safe to eat meat and drink milk as before."
