Mondi Introduced New Paper-Based Bag

Packaging and paper group Mondi Coatings has introduced new paper-based bag, which is coated with biodegradable, compostable and recyclable biopolymer solution Sustainex.

Said to be provided as a collection bag for the Nespresso recycling program, the bag has been developed using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper with a Sustainex coating, and renewable raw materials, according to Mondi.

The rigidity of the FSC paper and rectangular flat bottom offers stability to the bag.

Mondi Extrusion Coatings managing director Michael Strobl said the use of paper, along with the biopolymer supports the environmental requirements envisioned by Nespresso.

"Thanks to our in-depth know-how of biopolymers and various packaging technologies, we were able to develop a truly perfect solution in cooperation with Nespresso," Strobl added.

The packaging is claimed to be an eco-friendly and biodegradable solution as biopolymer coating that is used is thermo-sealed and dispenses with glue.

Nespresso Austria market director Dietmar Keuschnig said, "Thanks to the new Nespresso Recycling Bag we are confident to increase our recycling rate even more."

The collection bag can be closed with the help of a sealing strip and easily transported to one of 1.300 local recycling points once it is full. Both the bag and the coffee are completely compostable and the aluminum is infinitely recyclable.

In 2009 Nespresso introduced a collection and recycling system for used aluminum capsules as part of the Nespresso Ecolaboration program and currently has around 1300 recycling collection points in Austria.
