A New Plant About Manufacture Cars Will Be Built by Nissan in North America

Japanese carmaker Nissan is planning to build a new plant in North America to manufacture cars for its luxury vehicle division Infiniti.

The new facility will be aimed at producing about 100,000 premium Infiniti vehicles per year, upon the anticipated commencement of production in 2017, representing an investment of about $2bn.

Nissan is considering Mexico and Canada as possible options for the new plant in North America.

Infiniti Motor president Johan de Nysschen was cited by the Wall Street Journal as saying that apart from producing one model in the US for global consumption, the Infiniti brand's current production had been totally concentrated in Japan.

"One of the challenges we face is that we really do not have a diversified geographical footprint for manufacturing," Nysschen said.

Currently, Nissan manufactures almost all Infiniti brand vehicles in Japan, while the production would be shifted to US, when the new plant is opened.

In May 2012, Infiniti also revealed plans to build two models for China in collaboration with Nissan's partner Dongfeng Motor.
