Toyota to Recall 2.9 Million Vehicles Over Seatbelt Issues

Toyota Motors has announced safety recall for approximately 1.12 million vehicles over safety issues with seatbelt.

The company is recalling these vehicles saying that metal seat frame part could damage the seatbelts in case of crash.

Toyota expressed concerns over the safety of the seatbelts saying that in the event of a very severe crash, the tap belt webbing could contract a portion of the metal seat cushion frame and cut it.

If such an event happens, the seatbelt might not be able to hold or restrain the occupant, which could increase the risk of injury.

Reuters reported that apart from vehicles in North America, Toyota is also recalling vehicles from Europe numbering 625,000; 434,000 in China; 177,000 in Japan and 307,000 from other regions.

The make and models include RAV4 and RAV4 EV with model years ranging between 2006 -2012 and 2012 and 2014 respectively.

The company is unclear whether or not, there have been any injuries linked with this issue.

But, as reported by Automotive News, Toyota is aware of two incidents which have occurred in the US and Canada, where one person was injured and another person was killed.

It says it was not able to confirm any connections with the incidents to the failure of the seatbelts.

The company said that the vehicles involved are fitted with lap-shoulder seatbelts in both second-row outboard seats.

The company said that its dealers will add resin covers to the metal seat cushion frame at no cost.

Customers will be notified in first class mail, the automaker said.
